2. WHYReason For Taking The Network : The school is small (only 6 classes) and they are foreign students of various origins and social backgrounds, above all pupils coming from USA, Australia or Italian schools abroad. The teachers, trained and able to find new educational-pedagogical solutions and to adapt them to situations and individuals student, pursuing a global education and its values. Collaboration and comparison with the schools facilitate the sharing of good practices and methodologies.
Issues And Challenge : We would like to be an inclusive school and improve the intercultural skills in our students. Our aim is to increase the involvement in the school life and their relations with their peers by preventing isolation. We would like that the Italian students include the foreign pupils using our language not only for school-communication and building relations and interactions. Our intercultural skills are: - dealing with social and cultural changes at school and in the entire society - recognizing the value of diversity participating effectively in intercultural dialogue
3. HOWMethods / Steps / Tools Used : The inclusion of the foreign pupils in the primary schools is based by the guidelines of the “Protocollo di Accoglienza” approved by the Boarding School. In the 1° or recently enrolled classes, priority is given to welcome/integrating/intercultural and “italbase” activities with a personalization of learning. In the advanced classes there are also educational courses of help and support, especially for those who have not acquired a level of literacy suitable to support the language of the study, without excessive difficulty. TOOLS: - literacy workshop; - engage global competence; - understand and appreciate the perspectives and world views of others; - personalized learning plan: creating curricula with opportunities of specific learning; - cooperative learning: assure the cooperation with other students and the peer-tutoring; - problem solving approach; - different types of language: engage student in artistic and practice activities to find other ways to communicate to each others.
4. REFLECTIONLessons Learned : Our final aims are the dialogue between cultures and the formation of citizens, through development: - knowledge about Italian language for increase the relations and, also, the students self-esteem; - knowledge about oral and written language; - knowledge about listening and comprehension of a tale; - ability to dialogue with the classmates, even if they are of different cultures from their own. Sometimes, the teachers carried out activities with the specialists of the Centro Ulysse, that has operated for years in Florence. Thanks to their collaboration and the exchange between us it was and it’s possible organize and obtain a good preparation of our students.
Challenges Met : Prevention of marginalization. Optimizing resources and increasing the number of experiences.
